I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if you have error 5 and if it's making noises you unfortunately have a bad Hard Drive. Mine had both and at first I thought the circuit board was bad on the HD because of the noise. So I swapped in a known good one and it still did not function. Don't give up hope now! You can fix it. All you need a working hard drive. What I did was look for a broken Zune on eBay. I found one that said it would not Sync or Turn off. So I guessed the motherboard was bad. But when I got it it turned out to be working in perfect order! I got it for which was a steal because it's in impeccable shape and worked great. I'm guessing the seller did not have the right software on his computer and thought it was bad. So now I have a new working Zune, but what about my old one? The one that had error 5. Well I bought a lot of used hard drives. I got four "bad ones" for 99 cents. Yes I'm a lucky bastard. Well I tested them out and two turned out to work just fine. So I swapped one in and it's running great. If you have a bad zune what I would do it buy a replacement hard drive, they're cheap on eBay. This is for the 30GB first gen. Here are the links for under bucks! www.ebay.com ^make them an offer for bucks and they'll take it www.ebay.com There's also another option, which is to convert it to use a CF or SD card. I will show you that later on when my adapter arrives. If you don't wanna wait the quick notes is to buy a 1.8" 50 pin ZIF to Compact ...
